Obituary of Donald "Don" Ross

Please share a memory of Donald to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
ROSS - Donald "Don" Arthur, age 91, of Cheverie, passed away at home on April 26, 2017. Born in Cheverie on February 1, 1926, he was the son of the late Melvin and Agnes (Brown) Ross. With a little creative math, Don joined the Algonquin Regiment of Ontario at the tender age of fourteen and served overseas during World War II. Upon his return home, he worked in the woods with his brother Walter, at the Gypsum Mines in Kempt, and at the Barite Mine in Walton as a driller until it closed. Don married Joyce Marie Weatherbee on August 26, 1946, and they had three children, Judy, Donnie and Glenn. Not one to be idle, upon his retirement from the mine, Don used his carpentry skills to build houses, furniture, and the most amazing wooden models. Don was a lifelong member of the United Church and lived his life accordingly. The years Don and Joyce spent travelling and singing with the Mariners were some of the happiest of his life. When Joyce became ill in 2001, Don faithfully took care of her until her death in 2008. Don, Glenn, and Donnie started the process of fulfilling a lifelong dream of Don's - to build a cottage at the beach. The time the three of them spent planning and building the cottage was truly a gift for them. Weather permitting, Don and Glenn had tea at the cottage right up until Don went into the hospital. Don was a quiet, kind, patient, gentle man with a quick wit and grin. He was the last surviving member of his family. Don is survived by his son, Glenn Charles, at home; daughter-in-law, Leona (McLaughlin), Gore; son-in-law, Ed McLellan, Shubenacadie; grandsons, Trevor Harvey, Enfield; and David (Kim) Ross, Middle Sackville; granddaughter, Charlene Harvey, Fairfield, NB; great-grandchildren, Logan Harvey-Shannon and Cassandra Stephens-Harvey; step-grandson Alexander "Zander" Thibeault; and several nieces and nephews and extended family. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife of 62 years, Joyce; his son Donald "Donnie" in 2015, and his daughter Judith "Judy" in 2016. Visitation will be held on Saturday, April 29 from 6-8pm at J. Wilson Allen Funeral Home, Summerville. A funeral service will be held on Sunday, April 30 at 2pm at Cheverie United Church, Cheverie, Lois Brison-Brown officiating, followed by a private family committal at Cheverie Cemetery and a reception at the family home. Donations in memory of Don may be made to Cheverie United Church, c/o Mickey Crossley, Cheverie, NS, B0N 1G0. Arrangements have been entrusted to the compassionate care of the J. Wilson Allen Funeral Home, Hwy 215, Summerville; 1-902-633-2431. Please visit our website at www.allenfh.ca to sign the guest book or send private condolences.
