Obituary of Margret Annie Smith
SMITH - Margret Annie, of Upper Burlington. With gratitude for a long life – 94 ½ years - we said goodbye to our Margret (Margie, Marg, Mom, Nana) on December 11, 2018. Margie passed peacefully at her daughter’s home, with her daughter Pat and her grandson Andrew holding her hands. Born on June 16, 1924 in Highfield, she was the daughter of the late James and Essie (Johnson) Macumber. When she was 18 she married Arthur, the love of her life, and settled into life on the farm. Sometimes a reluctant traveller, Margie appreciated her time spent with her sister Florie and family in Alberta; she also enjoyed several visits to Oregon with Arthur visiting his cousins. Florie somehow persuaded Margie to travel with her to Israel, Spain and Venezuela. Those trips were fondly remembered and written about in rhyme. Margie and Arthur danced their way across Hants County for as long as they were able, attending dances all along the shore and beyond. One of her pet projects was genealogy and she was called upon many times to help others with their family searches. Margie is survived by sons David (Effie) and Brad (Eunice) and daughter Pat, all of Upper Burlington; she was Nana to 6 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by several half-siblings and many nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband Arthur in 2015, her son-in-law Joost, her sister Florence, and several half-siblings. A funeral service will be held on Friday, Dec.14, at 11:00 a.m. at the J. Wilson Allen Funeral Home, Summerville, Rev. Garnet Parker officiating, followed by a private family committal service at the Smith Family Cemetery, Upper Burlington. Donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia, 2719 Gladstone St, Halifax, NS B3K 0A4; or charity of one’s choice. Arrangements have been entrusted to the compassionate care of J. Wilson Allen Funeral Home, Summerville. Please visit their website at www.allenfh.ca to sign the guest book or send private condolences.
