Obituary of Leona Ross

Please share a memory of Leona to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
ROSS, Leona Estelle, age 67, of Bedford, passed away at home on her own terms on May 16, 2025. Born in Kentville, NS on October 11, 1957, she was the daughter of the late Alyre “Gordie” & Norma (Sanford) McLaughlin. Leona met Donnie on summer vacation when she was 9. She fell in love with him instantly, and when they moved to Nova Scotia in 1971, she was still in love with him. She married the love of her life in 1974, and ultimately lived a happy and contented life with Donnie and their son David in Gore. Leona spent her early years in New Brunswick before her family moved to Summerville. Leona and Donnie built their house in Gore, Hants County, where they spent many years together. She was an avid cook and baker; no one ever left her house hungry. She will forever be remembered by her family and friends for giving the gift of love, laughter and a full belly. She had a way with words and advice for any situation. Leona took joy in all the small things in life, from window browsing for hours, to spending time with her family and friends. Leona had a heart of gold and would help anyone, anywhere, anytime she could. Leona is survived by her son David (Shannon Kelsey), Halifax; siblings Sandra Bourn, Dartmouth, Glenn McLaughlin (Juanita Swinamer) Lr. Sackville, Mark (Donna McLaughlin) Middle Sackville, Monique McLaughlin (Gary Oickle) Hantsport; special niece Brianna “Matilda”, Brooklyn; special friends Stephen & Diane Stephens, Bedford; special sons Alex, James, Trever, and Steven; Brother-in-law Glenn Ross, Cheverie, as well as several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Donald “Donnie” Ross; parents, Alyre & Norma McLaughlin and parent-in-laws Don & Joyce Ross; sister-in-law, Judy McLellan. There we several special people in Leonas’ life who contributed to her journey; Chester Van Der Kooi; Shirley Morgan; Bev Newell; Phyllis Whitelock; Caroline Lawrence and Sharon Seary among others. There are many others who had an impact on Leonas’ life, and you know who you are. The family would like to thank Diane and Steve Stephens for their care, compassion, and love for Leona. The appointments, drives, iced caps, Dairy Queen, and laughter, meant so much to her. The sharing of their grandson Nathan was a gift Leona treasured. His smile and hugs lit up her life; they were “pinky friends.” Diane you are a cousin by blood and a sister by love. The care Leona received from the medical profession was extraordinary and we are very grateful they were there when she needed them. A celebration of life will take place at Cheverie United Church on Monday May 19, 2025 at 2:00pm. Reception to follow at the Summerville Firehall. Private family interment will take place at a later date. Family flowers only. If someone would like to make a donation; they can be made to the QEII Foundation, or the Cheverie United Church. Arrangements have been entrusted to the compassionate care of the J. Wilson Allen Funeral Home, Hwy 215, Summerville, N.S.
