It’s with deep sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our Mum, Sylvia Solveig Millard of Union Corner, Nova Scotia at age 92. Sylvia was born in New Denmark, New Brunswick in 1933, the youngest of a Norwegian immigrant family of twelve children.
Sylvia is survived by her husband of 72 years, Kenneth Millard of Union Corner, and her five children, Rick (Marsha), Judi (Bruce), Phillip (Martha), Florence (Matt) and Deanna (Jim); 11 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren.
She is predeceased by her parents, Inga and Halvard Grosvold and her sisters Tilla, Agnes, Gunvor, Ingrid (Marie), Sophie and brothers Tollef, Sigvart, Carsten, Hoken, Leo, and Olaf.
Mum had many interests and life’s passions, some of which were cooking and baking (perhaps the worlds biggest cookbook collection) and hosting many family members at the house where there was always a cup of tea or a meal and a great chat to be had. Mum was well read, always current on world affairs and enjoyed discussing politics. She was a voracious reader (she should have had shares in Harlequin Romance books; we’d be rich now). Being very artistic, she painted many oil, watercolor and tole painting artworks. She had been an active member of the West Hants Historical Society and enjoyed Scottish Country dancing. Likewise, she and Dad were avid square dancers. One of the activities that brought her great joy was travel. She and Dad (and often the kids) travelled throughout Canada, the US and later in Norway. Other fond memories include fun with her family at Grammie’s house in Pictou where the laughter and music were loud as the Norwegian flowed with us kids having no idea what was being said, many days poolside where we all seemed to gather (although it was forbidden to get her hair wet).
Mum was a wonderful Nana to her beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren and will be fondly remembered for her cakes, cookies and pies (especially butterscotch pies). Most of all she was so proud of her family.
Special thanks to the Windsor Elms Village and their staff who cared for Mum and Dad these past 13 months. Your kindness to Mum and to us will not be forgotten, thank you.
