Doug "Dougie" Siler Obituary
Douglas Carman Siler, age 84, passed away Wednesday, March 18, 2026, in Dykeland Lodge, Windsor with his family by his side. Born September 10, 1941, in Avondale, he was the son of the late William “Bill” and Kathleen “Kaye” (Kitchin) Siler.
Doug or “Dougie” as many called him, grew up in Avondale. As a young man he moved his family to Manitouwadge Ontario to work in mining, but Avondale was his home and they returned within a few years.
Doug owned & operated a landscaping business, Avondale Enterprises, for several years, supplying field sod to residential and commercial customers. He also hauled water and in winter worked at the Brooklyn Rink and operated a snowplow. Many have likely heard his thoughts about the need to “have a man on the wing”.
Doug worked many years at the Fundy Gypsum Company, retiring in 2000 following a stroke that significantly impacted his left side mobility. With determination and a stubborn streak that served him well, he learned to walk and even drive again.
Doug had many hobbies. He enjoyed being out on the Avon River or venturing further for trips to Parrsborro with friends or his late great uncle, Volney Withrow. He enjoyed hockey, especially following the career of his nephew, Brandon Benedict. In his later years you could often find him driving his golf cart in places no golf cart was meant to go. He did just about everything with the golf cart, except take it golfing. These adventures often included his nephew Shawn Benedict, and many other friends and family have also been for a spin.
No matter where he was, he’d be laughing, swearing and rubbing his hands together. If you don’t have a Dougie story there’s no way you met him.
Doug is survived by his children, Tara (Dan), Emilie (Mike), Stacey (Lawson); Pam (Medora) and Kim (Bill); and by Jordan Fisher who was like a son to him from the time Jordan was a teen, right until the end; grandchildren, Davey, Seth, Max, Louis, Kash, Brandon, Allanah, Chass, Ally & Tristan; siblings, Brenda, Carl (Debbie), and Sharon; as well as many other extended family members and friends.
Besides his parents, Doug was predeceased by his partner, Valerie Whitehead; son Carl in infancy; brothers in law Bob Leyenaar, Red Cochrane and Dale Benedict and grandson Michael in infancy.
Doug has been a resident of Dykeland Lodge for the past three and a half years making many special connections with residents and staff.
There will be no service, and the family will have a private internment at a later date. Donations in memory may be made to the Newport Landing Cemetery.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the compassionate care of J. Wilson Allen Funeral Home, Hwy 215, Summerville; 1-902-633-2431. Please visit our website at https://allenfh.ca/ to sign the guest book or send private condolences.
