HAZEL - Clara Augusta (Barkhouse), age 100, resident of the Windsor Elms Village, Falmouth, NS, formerly of Scotch Village, passed away peacefully at the Elms on Tuesday, August 16, 2016, one month shy of her 101st birthday. Clara was one of 13 children born to the late David Abner and Mary "Mamie" (Hayes) Barkhouse on September 29, 1915 in Upper Burlington. A loving mother, grandmother, sister, auntie, and friend, Clara was deeply devoted to her family and cherished everyone in it. She enjoyed homemade cooking, baking, and teaching these skills to her grandchildren to carry on. In earlier years, Clara loved to host family dinners, and her guests never left hungry. The Christmas Eve tradition of watching her open gifts will be missed by all, as it truly was a highlight of each year. She loved a good rocking chair, and there was always one for her and Dad in each room. Clara was the oldest living member of the Baptist Church in Scotch Village, performing many church duties throughout the years. Clara is survived by her children, Oren (Carmella) Hazel, Scotch Village; Beverly (Donnie) Crowell, Union Corner; and Darlene (Michael) Mosher, Scotch Village; eight grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson; her sister and best friend, Violet Churchill, Windsor; her "daughter of the heart", Velva (Don) Coppedge, Brewer, Maine; and many nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, Clara was predeceased by her husband of 72 years, Emory; son, Merlin; daughter-in-law, Val; and granddaughter, Marlene. Our family would like to extend a sincere and heartfelt thank you to the entire staff of Fundyview #4 and Dr. James Leahy for their love and devotion shown to Mom while in their care. You truly went above and beyond to provide a comfortable and loving home for her. Cremation has taken place with no visitation by request. A memorial service will be held on Monday, August 22, 2016 at 2pm at Newport Baptist Church, 929 Hwy 236, Scotch Village, Pastor Rick Manuel officiating, with a reception to follow in the church basement. Private family interment at Hillview Cemetery, Scotch Village. Family flowers only; donations in memory of Clara may be made to the Windsor Elms Village, 174 Falmouth Dyke Road, Falmouth, NS B0P 1L0; or the Newport Baptist Church, 929 Hwy 236, Scotch Village, NS B0N 2G0.
