Obituary of Terence "Ted" Sanford
Please share a memory of Terence to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Terence "Ted" Norman Sanford, of Woodville, formerly of Summerville, passed away on April 10, 2015 at the VG Hospital, Halifax, at the age of 90. Ted was born on February 10, 1925 to Leroy and Luella (MacRae) Sanford on the family farm in Summerville, Hants Co., NS. He grew up in the community and attended the two room school house in the village. When World War Two broke out, Ted was so keen to enlist, he tried to persuade the recruiter he was of age. However, he was only 15 and so was sent back to the farm. As soon as he could, he joined the Air Force. On his enlistment papers, he requested that he be sent 'anywhere but Newfoundland'. Naturally, he spent much of the war on the Rock. In 1948, he married Florence Jean Cox from Pembroke. They left the air force in 1954 and Ted held a variety of jobs before he set up his own business, running a General Store and building supply business in Summerville. He became a cornerstone of the village, actively participating in the local volunteer fire department and the local Baptist church. After Florence's death, Ted married Hildred Hawkesworth in 2004. Ted called himself "a country boy" and he lived up to the finest values associated with the country. Honest, hard-working, loyal and with a deep-rooted faith, he will be sorely missed by family and friends. He is survived by his wife, Hildred Sanford; his children, Phillip (Laurie), Keith, and Lorna (Lee); and his grandchildren Stephanie and Melissa Yorke; stepdaughters, Janet, Esther and Diane; and many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Ted was predeceased by his first wife, Florence; his brothers, Stanton, C. F. (Frank) Sanford, and Alfred; his sisters, Annabelle Pick, Helen McDonough, and Hilda Conway, and his daughter-in-law, Sylvie (Brissette). Cremation has taken place, with no visitation by request. The funeral service will be held on Monday, April 13 at 1:00pm at Kempt United Baptist Church, Summerville, Rev. Don Hirtle officiating, with a private family interment at Loyal Hill Cemetery, Summerville. Following the service, there will be a reception at the Summerville Fire Hall. The family asks that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Loyal Hill Cemetery.
