Obituary of Dorothy Adalene Hilchie
Hilchie, Dorothy Adalene (Gorman)- formerly of Burntcoat and Noel, died peacefully in Maplestone Extended Care, Halifax on Saturday, December 16th, 2017 in her 101st year. Born in White Settlement on August 1, 1917, she was a daughter of the late Matthew and Minnie (White) Gorman. This beautiful redhead and her future husband Harold met as teenagers when he was riding his bike. They married in 1937 and had 62 years together, farming in Burntcoat, and she worked every bit as hard as he. Mom was a feisty woman and lived her life on her own terms. She loved a bit of fun and hearing the old songs. Mom was a great believer in education and reading as a way to find success in life. She never walked, but ran from task to task keeping up with her large family. She loved to play cards and read voraciously. Mom saw many changes in the world and embraced them all with an open mind. She is survived by her children, Sheri Gaetz-MacCabe (Doug), Lake Echo; JoAnne Harrington (David), Mount Uniacke; Harold (Buddy) Hilchie (Eva), Mount Uniacke; Colleen Withrow (John), Mineville; Dale Hilchie, Fairview; Connie (Terry), St. John’s; and Vicki Howells, Windsor. She also leaves to mourn her sister, Hazel Cochrane, Minasville; ten grandchildren, great and great-great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Dorothy was predeceased by her husband in 1999, an infant son in 1941, sisters, Kathleen (Dean) Hilchie, Norma McCulloch , Agnes, in infancy; brothers, Enslie Gorman and Murray Gorman; and son-in-law Robin Howells. The family extends a heartfelt thank you to the compassionate staff at Maplestone Extended Care for their loving care of Mom these past eight years. No visitation by request.
