Deeply saddened to hear about Martin. He was a great guy; always pleasant, smiling, and a true professional. I was honored to be his colleague. I work at NSCC and was at the Institute of Technology campus when Martin and Anita taught the landscaping program. I teach electrical apprentices. Our program is now at the new Waterfront campus in Dartmouth, but I often thought I should go and "look up" Martin in the Kennetcook area. I would have enjoyed seeing him and catching up. We often chatted, and he usually had a funny story or observation about something that had happened that day, or sometime in his previous careers. The landscape program maintained the grounds at the campus, so Martin, Anita, and the students were often seen working on the property. Sometimes, Martin would don coveralls and ride the lawn tractor (of course, while still in shirt and tie!). One of our students commented; "Why is the principal cutting the grass?" To me, that was Martin. Always diligent in his work, but at the same time professional. Martin thought the student's comment was funny. He truly demonstrated the benchmark beliefs mentioned in the obituary. To all of Martin's family and friends, please accept my condolences on your loss. Even though I hadn't seen Martin in a few years, I often thought of him. God Bless. Jim Corbin

Joanne & I only met Martin once when he came to our home to look at some trees that needed pruning. He stayed & talked to us for an hour and a half, & we enjoyed every minute of our conversation with him. After he left Joanne and both said that we should hire him somtime just to come back for the conversation alone. We were both shocked to learn of his passing. Our deepest condolences to his wife Valerie and all of Martin,s family

Dear Valerie: We are still in shock over Martin's passing and I was hoping he would be with us this week-end in Windsor helping with the arborist's work for the Tree Canopy Project. He was always willing to pitch in. Our sincere sympathy to you and his family, he will be greatly missed by everyone. The ISA-Atlantic chapter will be making a donation to the fire Hall and we would like to plant a tree in his memory perhaps at the fire Hall. Please accept our sincere regrets that some of us won't be able to attend his memorial service on Saturday because of the Windsor project and we know he would want us to carry on! Stan & Peggy Kochanoff

So saddened to hear of Martin's sudden passing--a soft spoken man who managed to get the job done in whatever he undertook. A friend to many who will be sadly missed and he is no doubt supervising a landscape project in Heaven--may he rest in peace. My heartfelt Sympathy to you and the rest of the Family.

The words you used to describe Martin’s character were never more deserved. He was a true gentleman. I did not know him outside of the classroom at NSCC, where he taught me the complexities of turfgrass management, and that was my loss. My deepest sympathies to his family and friends.

Valerie, It is so hard to find the words at a time like this but please know you have been in our thoughts so much over the last few days. Martin was such a presence around the village and we will miss meeting up with him, hearing that soft "hello" and his gentle manner. He was such a gentleman and someone referred to him as the "Village Keeper"...what an adequate name for a wonderful man. Thinking of you Valerie, treasure your memories. Carla & Darrell
