Obituary of Verna Brison

Please share a memory of Verna to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Brison, Verna Patricia Age 84, of Cheverie, passed away peacefully at home November 19, after a long, valiant battle with Alzheimer's Disease. Born in Centre Burlington, Hants County, NS, on June 14, 1929, she was the daughter of the late C. Herbert Salter and May (Murphy) Salter. Verna taught school in Cheverie and Bramber until marrying Clifford in 1948. She became a valued and essential business partner in their grocery store until 1969. She worked extraordinarily hard throughout her life to support her husband and family. She ran her home with the same efficiency, thrift, and perfectionism that had made her a smart, successful businessperson and merchant. Verna instilled in her children a strong work ethic, a commitment to family and community, and a deep sense of fairness. Over time, Alzheimer's took its toll on Verna. However with the loving support of a wonderful caregiving team led by husband, Clifford, and daughter Frances, Verna was enabled to preserve her dignity to the end. She passed away, as per her wishes, in the home that she and Clifford had built 45 years ago. We are thankful for all the support from friends, families, and neighbours. We appreciate the kindness and devotion of Mom's exceptional homecare workers, as well as Dr. Catherine Smith and Dr. Kenneth Rockwood. Some have observed that while Verna taught Clifford a few things about how to run a store, he taught her something just as important, how to dance. She enjoyed many Saturday nights at old time dances all along the Hants Shore from Noel to Burlington. Verna was fiercely proud of her family. She will be remembered fondly by her husband of 65 years, Clifford, and their children Frances Brison, Wolfville, Phil Brison (Brenda), Upper Burlington, Mitchell Brison (Anna), Falmouth, Scott Brison (Maxime St-Pierre), Cheverie; grandchildren Jennifer Nicholls, John-Devon Nicholls, Kara Brison, Jocelyn Brison, Hannah Brison, Matthew Brison, Seth Brison and great grandson, Sam Nicholls; sisters, Margaret Faulkner, Cheverie, Helen Lunn, Brooklyn and Greta King, Nictaux and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brothers Avard Salter, Brooklyn and Logan Salter, Centre Burlington. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held on Saturday, November 23 from 2 to 4 p.m. in J. Wilson Allen Funeral Home, Summerville, Hants County. A celebration of Verna's life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 24, in the Cheverie United Church, Rev. Bill Gibson officating with a reception to follow at the Summerville Fire Hall. Private family burial at a later date Donations in Mom's memory may be made to the Cheverie United Church or to the Irene MacDonald Sobey Chair in Alzheimer's Research, c/o Dalhousie Medical Research Foundation, Suite 1-A1, 5850 College Street, Tupper Medical Building, Halifax, NS B3H 4R2 (or online at dmrf@dal.ca).
